Everyone is looking for ways to save money. Before you go to the extreme of turning off your air conditioning system in order to save on your energy costs, why don't you try some of these strategies?
We hate to break it to you, but if you are searching for ways to lower your cooling bill, you have turned into your father (or mother!).
Here are some tried and true strategies that your parents may have also used to keep the house cool during the summer.
A ceiling fan helps disperse cool air more efficiently and may allow you to raise the thermostat by as much as four degrees without feeling too uncomfortable. But, of course, make sure you turn off the fan when you leave the room to increase your energy savings.
Increase the temperature in your home when you know you will be out to decrease your cooling bill. However, you might program your smart thermostat so that you walk into a house when it is at a comfortable temperature.
Are you not sure how to program your thermostat? Ask your local heating and cooling company to help.
Don't use the oven, dishwasher, or clothes dryer during the heat of the day. These activities will increase your home's temperature and make your AC work harder. Instead, use your air fryer or microwave, and wait until the temperatures drop to run the dishwasher or clothes dryer.
While we encourage using ceiling fans and fans to increase the airflow in the room you are occupying, it is not a good idea to leave your bathroom exhaust fan on all day. Instead, after showering, leave it on for 20–30 minutes to help clear the moisture out of the air. Then turn it off, so it doesn't suck the cool air out of the house.
A radiant barrier should be installed across the underside of your roof to arm your home against heating and cooling leakage.
Keep the hot air out, and the cool air in during the summer by ensuring you don't have any air leaks around your doors and windows.
Train your children to close the door, turn off the lights, and use fans. Once you have trained them to save energy, write a tell-all book to teach the rest of us how you did it.
Last but not least, make sure your air conditioner is functioning properly. Have your local HVAC company examine it when the temperatures start to rise.
