Winter Furnace Tips
Prepare your furnace and home for winter with these great tips!

We admire the do-it-yourself spirit that is a strong component of our Midwestern heritage. However, there are some jobs that professionals simply do better.
You may have read tips online on how to prepare your furnace for winter. You may have even bought a new can of spray compressed air in preparation for the task. But before you head down to the basement to give it a go, we would like to encourage you to pause a moment to consider these truths:
- HVAC replacement is expensive.
- A poorly operating furnace can be a danger to your family.
- You may not be the best person for the job of preparing your furnace for winter.
There are plenty of projects you can complete to prepare your home for winter. For example, you can rake your leaves, cover or store your deck furniture, and hang a few holiday lights outside. However, when it comes to getting one of the most complex and expensive systems in your house prepared for use, please consider calling Schomburg Heating and Cooling.
To make it easy for ardent do-it-yourselfers to let go of a project, we have designed a preventative maintenance service that we call the Schomburg Comfort Club. We offer this service to previous and new clients – it doesn’t matter if you bought your HVAC system through us or not.
As a member of the Schomburg Comfort Club, you’ll receive two visits each year: one in the fall and one in the spring.
During the late fall/early winter visit, we will conduct a full test of your heating equipment. While our priority is checking the furnace’s safety, we will also make sure your system runs as efficiently as possible.
Here’s a list of services that are included:
- Check for gas/carbon monoxide leaks. (Do you have a working carbon monoxide detector in your house? It might be time for an updated sensor if it’s more than five years old.)
- Check and change the air filter. (Don’t worry. We won’t judge you if your furnace filter is dirty, but we will change it for you.)
- Adjust the gas burners and controls where needed. If you have a gas HVAC unit, it’s essential that your burners are in working order.
- Clean and adjust the system’s safety controls.
- Test and adjust the thermostat. (Maybe there’s a reason you’re always hot or cold!)
- Check and adjust the gas pressure. (If the system’s gas pressure is incorrectly adjusted, you may have a difficult time maintaining the temperature in your home.)
- Inspect temperature rise across the furnace.
- Run and review a complete cycle of operation.
- Give you peace of mind. (You’ll feel better knowing that your home furnace was inspected by a professional!)
Our technician will also be there to answer any questions you might have about air purification systems, such as our Air Scrubbers and whole-house humidifiers. And, of course, if some part of your system isn’t working correctly, Schomburg Heating and Cooling also offers furnace repair services.
Go ahead and make the call to schedule your furnace maintenance check. You’ll be relieved knowing that your furnace has been maintained by a professional.
